Water Quality Laboratory

Our laboratory was renovated thanks to a generous grant from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust in 2025. The project doubled our space, added new cabinets and workbenches, new equipment, and a window! We are now able to store more samples, run the Metrohm Eco Ion Chromatograph for anions (nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, fluoride, chloride, bromide, and sulfate), and quantify E. coli and total coliform bacteria. We have a microscope with a digital display that allows us ot photograph and record aquatic organisms, and we keep aquaria with various organisms in our lab. We also work with labs at Iowa State University, the State Hygienic Lab, the Laboratory for Infectious Diseases in the Environment, the Iowa Soybean Association, Des Moines Water Works, Jonah Ventures, and the Nebraska Water Science Center to assess PFAS, metals in soils, pathogens, microcystin, source tracking, and other parameters.
